Rebecca Gratz & 19th-Century America
Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869), the Philadelphia philanthropist, is remembered today for her many good works (including the first Hebrew Sunday School), but also for her beauty, the legend of her thwarted love for a man who was not Jewish and the persistent story that she was the inspiration for the character of Rebecca in Scott's novel Ivanhoe. The Gratz family has left a trove of more than 2,000 letters which have permitted me to investigate Rebecca's life and learn some interesting things about women's lives in antebellum America. My blog presents some of this material which I think may be of interest to others.
