Somes Island, in Wellington Harbour, (now known as Matiu/Somes Island, ackowledging its Maori heritage) served as an internment camp for 'enemy alien' prisoners (mostly German) in both world wars. This website focuses on WWI, but also looks at the rest of the island's history as a quarantine station for both animals and people.
