WRMail Launches

We're pleased to announce that the WRMail alert system is finally ready. We'd love for you to try it. Login and visit your My rings page to gain access to configuration and mail screens, and give us your feedback. Be advised that once you configure it to be on you will only be able to turn it off if your email address has been verified. See the help page for the WRMail configuration page for more details.

All new accounts are now configured to use WRMail by default, and we'll soon configure all accounts without verified email addresses on file to use WRMail as well. Once your external email account is verified you're free to use WRMail or not as you see fit.

Ring Management Changes

In a continuing effort to improve the service we provide to ring Managers we've introduced a number of new features since our last status report. Check here to see that you're aware of them all:
  • New Rewards Program! - We've started a new program to reward those rings/ring managers that attract new, unique members. WebRing grows best throught he efforts of ring managers to find and attract new members to their ring(s). Beginning in January started tracking new memberships to see which ring they join first. Weekly we reward any ring that adds a "new" member with a credit to the manager's User ID. In addition the list of rings with new members is listed under a new section on the front page of the system entitled "Growing rings". We're entering our third week of rewards and have thus far added nearly $500 in credits to manager accounts. Thanks for the hard work ring Masters! We appreciate it.

    What constitutes a qualifying new member? - It must be a new member, url, email address combination and, naturally, the site must be active and have passing navigation code (not instantly of course). Initial submission to the ring "My First WebRing" will not be counted as a first membership, so ring managers that encourage members to join My First either before or after they join their own ring will not be affected by this.

    So ring managers, go do what you do well: Find new, and topical, sites, for your ring(s), invite them to join and help them get the navigation code working on their site. Let's make 2004 a year of growth for everyone. New vitality in membership, great new sites, and increased traffic to your rings and member sites!

  • Notification of member edits - You can configure your ring(s), via the Join Settings screen, to notify you immediately whenever a member edits their site information: Title, URL, or description. Use this to help you stay current in ring management.
  • Uniqueness Rating - This is a value you can observe on a ring's hub page. It is a measure of the uniqueness of the sites in the ring. The pros-cons of the idea have been discussed in depth in the Manager's Forum.
  • New Submission "Hold" status - We've added a new option when managing new submissions. Rather than approving or denying a new submission you can place it on "hold". This will prevent the site from being auto-managed in any way, and can serve as a bookeeping aid for those sites that may or may not qualify for your ring but you want something done before you make a final decision. We'll be adding ease of use tools to the My rings area to facilitate use of this new status.

Account Creation Improvements

We've made some changes to the User ID creation process that we hope will make it easier and faster for new members to join and get activated in rings. Other join streamlines are in the works as well.

WebRing is a Community supported system

WebRing is best supported by you, the community. Many that have pitched in have found that the promotional credit they receive can be put to very good use by either featuring the ring in the directory and/or requesting to have their site(s) featured on ring Hub pages. The results are almost always noticeable right away in increased traffic to the ring or site. It's a win-win for us all: Increased visibility for your ring or site and support for WebRing.
