   NDC Railroad between Glenham & Hopewell Junction Preview Go
The Central New England Railway (CNE) / Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad between Glenham to Hopewell Junction. The Newburgh, Dutchess and Connecticut Railroad became part of the CNE. The CNE became part of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. The New Haven Railroad merged into Penn Central, then Conrail. This trackage was next operated by the Housatonic Railroad, and finally by Metro North Railroad.

The Southern New York Railway: once ran interurban electric between Oneonta and Mohawk Valley. See a great trip report from the 1930s. Then it bacame a shortline in the Oneonta, New York area. There were railroad connections in Oneonta with the New York Central Railroad Catskill Mountain Branch and the Delaware and Hudson Railway main line between Albany and northern Pennsylvania.

It all began in 1825 when George Featherstonhaugh announced the formation of the Mohawk & Hudson Rail Road Company. In 1831 the "DeWitt Clinton" make its first run on the Mohawk & Hudson between Albany and Schenectady. The New York Central Railroad was created in 1853 by the merger of ten railroads between Albany and Buffalo. It was spearheaded by Albany industrialist Erastus Corning. Commodore Vanderbilt brought it together with the Hudson River and Harlem Railroads to form the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. In 1914, it merged again with several railroads between Buffalo and Chicago to form the New York Central Railroad Company.

The 20th Century Limited was probably the all-time most famous train. It does not exist anymore nor does the New York Central Railroad. But the memories live on. Name trains in the Empire Corridor. During the 1920's, 37 name trains traveled the Water Level mainline. This huge mass of trains was sometimes referred to as the Great Steel Fleet.
