Who was the NHL's best goalie ever? originalsix 01/05/2012
The Rink Ring logo is the mask of Hall of Fame goalie Ken Dryden. He was one of the NHL's great goalies winning the Vezina 5 times but was he the NHL's best goalie ever?

For a list of Vezina Trophy winners see http://vezina.sportsontheweb.net/   reply

Martin Brodeur is the NHL's all-time leader in regular season wins, losses, shutouts, and games played. He is the only goalie in NHL history with eight 40-win seasons. He is a four-time Vezina Trophy winner, a five-time Jennings Trophy winner, a ten-time NHL All-Star, a Calder Memorial Trophy winner.

Brodeur has won two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games, as well as several other medals with Team Canada in other international competitions.   reply

From 1993 to 2001, Dominik Hasek won six Vezina Trophies. In 1998 he won his second consecutive Hart Memorial Trophy, becoming the first goaltender to win the award multiple times. During the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, he led the Czech national ice hockey team to its first and only Olympic gold medal. 'The Dominator' was the best ever.   reply

Although he retired from hockey in 1975, Jacques Plante is still the best goalie ever in the NHL. He won 7 Vezina Trophies, 6 Stanley Cups and the Hart Trophy. As important was that he was an innovator. Plante developed and wore a goaltender mask; he was one of the first goaltenders to skate behind the net to stop the puck; he was one of the first to raise his arm on an icing call to let his defencemen know what was happening; and he was a pioneer of stickhandling the puck.   reply

Patrick Roy is the only player in NHL history to be voted the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs 3 times. He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender 3 times. He won the Jennings Trophy (fewest goals allowed) 5 times. For me, what makes Roy the best goalie ever is that he played for 2 teams and won 2 Stanley Cups with each team. He didn't win Stanley Cups because his teams were great, his teams won Stanley Cups because Roy was great.   reply
